How to remove the background from product photos
A clean product photo sells better than a messy room behind it. Here is how to cut out a product, put it on white or a brand colour, and keep unreleased work private.
Why privacy matters for product work
Product shots are often unreleased: a new colourway, a prototype, a client's catalogue. Most background removers upload the photo to a server. The STUDIO·ITY Background Remover runs in your browser, so the photo never leaves your device.
Step by step
- Shoot for a clean cut. Use even light and a background that differs from the product in colour. A sheet of paper or a plain wall is enough.
- Choose Detailed. Products are not portraits, so the general Detailed model is the right pick. It follows hard edges and thin parts such as straps, handles and cables.
- Tune the edge. Move Edge position slightly negative if you see a light fringe where the product met the old background. Keep Softness low for hard-edged products, and a little higher for fabric and plants.
- Pick the background. Keep it transparent for a web shop with coloured sections, or switch to white for a classic listing photo.
- Export. Free exports are limited to 600px with a small watermark, good for testing. For listings and print, Pro exports the full resolution without watermark.
Tips
- Check the rules of your marketplace. Many ask for a plain white background and a minimum image size. Look up the current rules before you upload.
- Transparent glass and shiny metal are hard for any cut-out tool. Check the edges closely and soften them a little.
- Add a shadow back. A cut-out floats. A soft shadow under the product makes it look grounded, and is quick to add in any design tool.
- Make it a campaign image. Send the cut-out to The Studio and place it on a halftone or risograph background for a poster or social post.
Quick answers
Can I remove the background from many product photos?
Yes. There is no limit on how many photos you process. You do them one after another, and the model stays loaded after the first one.
Is it good enough for a web shop?
For most products it is. Use Detailed, check the edges, and export at full resolution with Pro for the best result.
